Water Recycling for Stone Fabrication

Water is essential in the Stone Fabrication Industry. Your equipment and tools need a reliable source of water to keep your business running efficiently. Since all these tools use water, they also produce a lot of wastewater. Over a million gallons of water are used annually to cut and polish marble, granite, quartz, ceramic, concrete and other types of stone.

Water and Wastewater Cost Money

The cost of clean water is going up, and by using a Water Recycling System, it can reduce costs, provide an adequate supply of water, and keep you in compliance with new regulatory demands.

Even, if your business has limited or no access to an adequate water supply, Met-Chem can provide you with a closed-loop water recycling system. Reducing the need to haul water.

How do I Size a Filter Press and Water Recycling System for my Stone or Granite Shop?

Whether using a bridge saw, grinding machine, or any other process equipment in your stone fabrication business you are producing water that needs to be cleaned.  The key to sizing your system is understanding how much water is being produced.  Your production equipment will come with a GPM (Gallons per Minute) rating for its water usage.  This number will be a high flow rate, but we do not need to size a water recycling system for this flow rate as your machines will not be running for 8 hours a day as they will have downtime for breaks, changing out the piece being machined, etc.. To figure out your daily water needs all Met-Chem needs are the flow rates for waste consumption by each of your machines and an estimate of how long they will be used per day.  We will then take that number and come up with an average flow rate we will need to treat.

Most facilities will have an in-ground pit which can collect the surges/high flows of water.  If your facility does not have a pit, Met-Chem can provide a large, above ground, holding tank.  With this in place, we can now size a more economical system to handle your daily average flow as opposed to an unnecessarily larger, and costly, system to handle your max flows.

An example of how to size your system:

A small granite shop that has 2 Bridge Saw Tables produces around 30 GPM of water, and each Table is ran for about 3 hours per day. The shop also has 2 Hand Polishers that each produce 20 GPM, but they are only run 2 hours per day. The shop also has 1 edge polisher that is ran for 3 hours a day, and it produces 25 GPM. Using the chart below, you can estimate your total gallons used. First you will will convert gallons per minute to gallons per hour multiplied by the number of pieces used. Then, you can multiply the GPH by the number of hours the equipment is used per day. Finally, add up the gallons of water used per day. This gives us a total volume of 20,100 gallons of water produced per day. Since the wastewater recycling system and the filter press can run all day, we can treat this flow over the entire work day. When we average this over the course of an 8 hour work day, You can covert your system back to GPM by dividing the total gallons by the 8 hour work day and 60 minutes. Thus giving us a system that can treat about 41.87 GPM.

Met-Chem’s water recycling systems can treat flows as low as 5 GPM and as high as 500 GPM.  Inquire with our sales department today about a water recycling system and Filter Press for your specific needs.

*GPM rates will vary on your specific equipment used
